Nagartitha

Nagartirtha is a heritage and cultural centre in Katwa that brings together artisan villages, crafts and handloom complexes, exhibition spaces, performance venues, and waterfront landscapes into a single cultural destination. Organized around a central water body, the project celebrates the living traditions of Bengal through architecture, craft, and community.

Concept

A Pilgrimage Through Culture and Craft

The concept of Nagartirtha emerges from the idea of a tirtha—a place of journey, gathering, and cultural significance. The project is conceived as a contemporary pilgrimage through the diverse traditions of Bengal, where architecture, landscape, and water come together to create an immersive cultural experience.

A central water body forms the heart of the masterplan, around which a constellation of cultural programs is organized. Artisan villages, exhibition spaces, performance venues, and community spaces are connected through shaded walkways, courtyards, and waterfront promenades, encouraging exploration and interaction.

Inspired by the spatial character of traditional Bengali settlements, the design employs:

  • Clustered pavilions that create a human-scaled cultural environment.

  • Courtyards and open spaces that encourage gathering and social exchange.

  • Waterfront edges and promenades that establish a strong relationship with the landscape.

  • Brick, terracotta, and locally rooted materials that express the identity and craftsmanship of Bengal.

Nagartirtha is envisioned as a living repository of heritage—a cultural destination where making, learning, performing, and experiencing become part of a continuous journey through the traditions of Bengal.
