Shilpangan
Shilpangan is a contemporary crafts complex organized around a network of courtyards that celebrate making, community, and cultural exchange. Inspired by the spatial qualities of traditional Bengali artisan settlements, the project creates a living environment where craftsmanship, learning, and public engagement come together through climate-responsive and materially rooted architecture.
Concept
The Courtyard of Crafts
The design originates from a simple modular grid that is gradually articulated into a cluster of interconnected pavilions and courtyards, transforming a rigid framework into a porous composition of built and open spaces.
Each module accommodates a distinct craft activity, while the courtyards become shared spaces for gathering, learning, and cultural exchange. Inspired by traditional Bengali artisan settlements, the architecture employs modular clustering, climate-responsive courtyards, terracotta screens, and layered circulation to foster interaction and natural ventilation.
Shilpangan reinterprets the artisan village as a contemporary cultural hub where making, exhibiting, and experiencing crafts become part of a collective journey.
